Studies show automobiles that are purchased new are driven for about seven years, on average. Those purchased used are driven for about five years. The old adage is that you should never repair a damaged vehicle if the cost is more than half of the auto’s value. So, when a costly repair came around, people would buy a fresh model. However, with the increase in competition between domestic and foreign markets in the 80s and 90s, all models have become more reliable. Since 1995, when studies began, the average age of cars on the road has steadily increased. Today, of the 250 million cars in the U.S., the average age is 11.7 years. Consumers expect automobiles to last, and they purchase them for their reliability. As a result, there is a plethora of reliable, quality models available from any used car dealer.

In conclusion, the choice between new and pre-owned vehicles is an easy one. An auto from a used car dealer will give you the same level of reliability and safety as new cars. Pre-owned vehicles, on average, cost less than half the price of new ones and depreciate significantly less. If you are interested in getting the same features as a new auto, but for less money, then the pre-owned market is for you.

Trouble With Motivation?

One way I have found to keep my teams motivated is to take a step back from practice and let the athletes play a game. No matter what the age is, from tinies all the way up to senior age, they all love to play games once in a while at practice. The key is to let them play games that are age appropriate. I have found that the youngest age teams like to play games as simple as “Duck, Duck, Goose”, as for the older athletes, this is not the case. One of the most popular games that my teams have played is a game we call “Classes”. This game is where you split the team up into two different teams. You then explain the rules (you can really make up whatever you would like). As a coach, we would just give them a task to do and whoever completed it first would get a point. All of the athletes found this to be tons of fun and quite possibly their favorite game to play at practice, even though it is a simple concept. These are just a few ideas of games, nevertheless you can have your team play any game you or they want.

Another way I have found to keep a team motivated is to set goals that are to be met by a specific date. Something as simple as that will keep a team positive and allow them to have it set in their minds that they need to keep on working. At the gym I work at, we have the athletes all get in a circle and hold a piece of ribbon that connects them all as one. We then go down the line letting each athlete state their personal goal and their team goal. Once we get through everyone on the team each athlete cuts off a small piece of the ribbon and ties it to his or her shoe. That way they have a constant reminder of their goal and promise to the team.

Another great way to keep a team motivated is to get them out of the gym as a team. You can do something as simple as have a party at someone’s house. Many times my team would have pasta parties or pizza parties at someone’s house. We would each chip in for the costs and then bring in a dessert, drinks, snacks, appetizers, etc. This is always a fun way to get the team together outside of practice. It is very inexpensive and creates great memories. It also brings the team closer together because they are hanging out and having fun outside of practice.

An additional fun way to get the team out of the gym and motivated is to go to a team building activity together. Team building activities can be almost anything; a great one is obstacle courses. As a team, we went to an outdoor facility together (called Iron Oaks). There we did fun activities that kept us all thinking. Alongside of it keeping us thinking, it assured that we all worked together to accomplish a goal. The way that this keeps a team motivated is because it is keeping a team working together to accomplish a goal, just as a team needs to keep working together to push through competitions.

Another key tool to keep a team motivated is simple, communication. Keep communicating with your athletes. Talk to them about things that are going on in their lives, if they are having troubles outside of the sport, then chances are they will take the problems with them into the gym. This causes for distractions, and everyone in cheerleading knows it is really hard to push through practice when you have other things on your mind.

Be sure to give your team the right tools to stay motivated. Make sure they have the right equipment to succeed, whether it is the right type of shoe or clothing to the right type of mats or trampolines. This will help them train hard and correctly. Athletes will not be able to advance their skills if they do not have the correct tools to keep working and advancing.

The most important way to keep a team motivated is to lead by example. Be a good example to your team, whether you are a coach, athlete, parent, or a gym owner. Setting a good example will cause the team to look up to you and want to work just as hard as you are. If you are a hard worker and positive about things, then your team will look toward you for guidance and want to learn from you.

The Seven Keys to Motivation

Motivation. It’s a complicated subject that is studied by

many and understood by few. Virtually every aspect of

human life — from the mundane to the life-changing — is

guided, swayed and altered by motivating factors.

For instance, what to have for dinner may be motivated by a

desire to lose or gain weight. Whether or not to attend a

business seminar may be motivated by the speakers,

location and cost. When and where to buy new clothing may

be motivated by a long list of personal preferences as well

as the changing seasons and weather conditions.

Even reading this article is a motivated behavior. Do you

like the style of writing? Are you curious about the subject

matter? Do you have a desire to learn new information? Do

you have enough time to finish reading? If the answers are

no, you probably won’t continue reading!

But since you have continued, you are obviously motivated.

You want to learn more about how to get and stay

motivated, and how this motivation can help you become a

better business owner.

THE BUSINESS OF MOTIVATION

Motivation is one of the most powerful driving forces in the

workplace. It can mean the difference between tremendous

success and failure.

Motivation stems from two sources. The first part of

motivation is external or extrinsic (outside the person)

sources. Other motivating factors come from internal

forces, which are mainly your thoughts, patterns and

collective experiences.

However, humans are unique, so what motivates Jack will

not necessarily motivate Jill. You — and only you — will be

able to determine what works.

Take the time to examine what internal and external factors

are motivating you as a business owner. What can you do

to enhance and refine your motivation to make yourself

more productive and more fulfilled?

Here are seven keys to motivation that may prove helpful.

1. INSPIRATION

Inspiration is critical to getting and staying motivated. If you

are not interested in your business, your motivation level will

never be high and you won’t be able to sustain interest for

very long.

On the flip side, if you are energized and excited about the

work you are doing, you will have more persistence, energy

and intensity.

Take an honest look at your inspiration level. Are you

excited about going to work or is it an obligation? You would

be surprised at the number of people who choose a

business that looks good on paper, but in reality does not

interest them in the least. These individuals will grow

weary

and uninterested pretty quickly because they have no

inspiration or passion to sustain them during the difficult

times they will encounter as a small business owner.

If you don’t really enjoy your work, then think how you can

re-focus your small business to better match your needs.

Or consider making a change entirely. That’s pretty drastic

advice, but inspiration is that important.

2. SETTING GOALS

Short and long-term goal setting is vital for any business

owner. If you didn’t set goals, you would be adrift with

nothing to strive for and no charted course to follow.

How could you possibly be motivated if you were unsure

about the direction of your company?

Take the time to put your goals in writing. A business plan

may sound daunting, but it is really nothing more than

goals, strategies, implementation and a budget. Write your

own business plan and update it at least annually. Include

“mini-goals” that can be accomplished in a matter of hours,

days or weeks as well as the more ambitious “grand-goals”

that may take years to complete. Refer to this plan

throughout the year.

But can a business plan really help motivate you? Yes!

Written goals will make you feel more professional and

certainly more connected to your business. It will also free

you from having to reinvent your business goals every single

day.

3. NETWORKING

Another key factor in getting and staying motivated is

networking with other small business owners. One person

can’t move huge mountains. However, when a number of

people begin working together the mountains are suddenly

only small hills — simply challenges waiting to be

surmounted.

In fact, the isolation of working alone is of one the most

difficult parts of being an entrepreneur. Mutual support is

motivating. So, make it easier on yourself by connecting

with others either in your community or online. Even when

businesses are not related, you will often find common

ground and ways to work together.

Many successful entrepreneurs report that finding the right

networking group was a turning point in the growth of the

business. Working together, a networking group can help

its members generate more qualified sales leads and solve

problems faster and more efficiently. Sharing ideas,

expertise and experience is also an invaluable aspect of

networking groups. And, don’t forget about sharing costs,

possibly by buying in bulk or with joint marketing projects.

Your own personal team of business owners will help

re-energize you when the burdens of running your own

business seem too much. With your networking team to

rely on, you can accomplish more in less time and probably

have more fun in the process. Certainly, you will feel less

alone.

4. REWARD YOURSELF

Small business owners will always have to work hard, but

all work and no play is a huge mistake. Your motivation will

soon begin to fall if you never take any time away from the

demands of running the business.

So, plan frequent rewards for yourself. No, it doesn’t need

to be a trip to Hawaii (although this is a great idea). Your

reward can be as simple as a lunch out with an old friend, a

matinee with your significant other, an afternoon of

shopping or a relaxing massage.

If your budget and time will allow, take a few days off for a

short trip or simply schedule a vacation from work for a few

days. Make it a real vacation — even if you don’t leave town —

so no checking email, voice mail or the fax machine. You

need to get away, unwind and renew yourself. This “down”

time to regenerate will help improve your attitude and

perspective. It sounds corny, but you will come back to your

business with a new sense of motivation.

5. EXERCISE

While it isn’t always immediately apparent, there is a

powerful connection between the mind and the body. It is

vital for every small business owner to take breaks and

exercise — everyday. If your body isn’t healthy, your

motivation will certainly suffer.

These exercise breaks don’t have to be huge blocks of time,

and you needn’t spend money joining a gym or hiring a

personal trainer. Start by walking briskly for 30 minutes

before, during or after work. After you have incorporated a

walk each day, then try doubling the time or doing two walks

each day.

Whatever works for you is best, but the important thing is to

start. You will begin to feel better.

After the walking is part of your routine, add some basic light

weights. Buy a tape or go online to find out how to properly

use the weights so you won’t injure yourself.

You can keep the weights under your desk, and use them

for just a few minutes at a time. Buy a timer the next time

you are at the grocery store. Set the timer for for three

minutes to start and then add a minute or two until you’re up

to 10 or 15 minutes each day.

Some small business owners have a television at work and

they schedule a CNN break along with their weights. This

way, they are catching up with world and local news while

simultaneously getting some moderate exercise.

8. ORGANIZE

Organization is critical to motivation. How can you feel good

about your work, when you can’t find important papers or

you are constantly late returning messages? Your

business will falter and your motivation will suffer.

Some people just can’t get organized. If you are one of

them, then consider bringing in someone — a business

friend, family member or professional — to help you get the

clutter and mess cleaned up. You will be amazed at how

this one important step will help you get back on the

organizational track. Don’t stop there. Now really get

organized by creating business systems that will help you

streamline your operations.

The real challenge will be keeping yourself on track by

maintaining these systems. For many, it is a daily

challenge, but if you use your organizational systems you’ll

be free to think about other important issues.

7. MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS AND AUTHORS

As small business owners, it seems we are bombarded

with motivational ideas and materials– tapes, books, CD’s,

seminars, workbooks, videos and more. Why are there so

many different motivational products, authors and

speakers? Because people are buying these materials.

Used effectively, they are effective and therefore they sell!

However, there are so many different motivational gurus that

it is often difficult to see through the clutter to find someone

that makes sense for you — someone who can get you “fired

up” about working and improving your business.

Try talking to your mentor or networking group members to

see who they might recommend. Start being aware of the

more enthused and positive about your business. Do some

light research of your own to find some authors and

speakers that interest you.

Before you invest in motivational materials, you can probably

find some inexpensive ways to obtain the materials. Check

out your local library, tune into your local PBS station, buy

materials with a networking friend, visit used bookstores or

buy used materials online. Don’t make a huge investment,

because you will probably want to sample many different

viewpoints.

But do these materials really work? Yes, but only if you

make the effort. Just like exercise, you have to work the

muscles — in this case your mind muscles.

It is up to you to take that information and apply it to your own

life and business. Really use the motivational ideas over a

period of time and you will begin to see results.

Hypothalamus – Role in Motivation and Behaviour

The question of why we are motivated to certain behaviours is perhaps one of the most fundamental in Psychology. Since Pavlov described conditioning in dogs in his famous 1927 paper, scientists have pondered the origins of motivations that drive us to action. For most of the early twentieth century, behaviourists like Watson & Skinner sought to explain behaviour in terms of external physical stimuli, suggesting that learned responses, hedonic reward and reinforcement were motives to elicit a particular behaviour. However, this does not tell the whole story. In the last few decades, the school of cognitive psychology has focused on additional mechanisms of motivation: our desires according to social and cultural factors having an influence on behaviour. Furthermore, recent advances in neuroimaging technology have allowed scientists an insight into the vast complexities and modular nature of specific brain regions. This research has shown that behaviours necessary for survival also have an inherent biological basis.

The biological trigger for inherent behaviours such as eating, drinking and temperature control can be traced to the hypothalamus, an area of the diencephalon. This article will explore the hypothalamic role in such motivated behaviours. It is important to note that a motivated behaviour resulting from internal hypothalamic stimuli is only one aspect of what is a complex and integrated response.

The hypothalamus links the autonomic nervous system to the endocrine system and serves many vital functions. It is the homeostatic ‘control centre’ of the body, maintaining a balanced internal environment by having specific regulatory areas for body temperature, body weight, osmotic balance and blood pressure. It can be categorised as having three main outputs: the autonomic nervous system, the endocrine system and motivated behavioural response. The central role of the hypothalamus in motivated behaviour was proposed as early as 1954 by Eliot Stellar who suggested that “the amount of motivated behaviour is a direct function of the amount of activity in certain excitatory centres of the hypothalamus” (p6). This postulation has inspired a wealth of subsequent research.

Much of this research has been in the field of thermoregulation. The body’s ability to maintain a steady internal environment is of critical importance for survivalas many crucialbiochemical reactions will only function within a narrow temperature range. In 1961, Nakayama et al discovered thermosensitive neurons in the medial preoptic area of the hypothalamus. Subsequent research showed that stimulation of the hypothalamic region initiated humoral and visceromotor responses such as panting, shivering, sweating, vasodilation and vasoconstriction. However, somatic motor responses are also initiated by the lateral hypothalamus. It is much more effective to move around, rub your hands together or put on extra clothes if you are feeling cold. Similarly, if you are too warm you might remove some clothing or fan yourself to cool down. These motivated behaviours demonstrate that in contrast to a fixed stimulus response, motivated behaviour stimulated by the hypothalamus has a variable relationship between input and output. This interaction with our external environment may be a ‘choice’, however it is clear that the motivation to make these choices has a biological basis.

The mechanics of thermoregulation can be explained by what is sometimes referred to as ‘drive states’. This is essentially a feedback loop that is initiated by an internal stimulus which requires an external response. Kendal (2000) defines drive states as “characterised by tension and discomfort due to a physiological need followed by relief when the need is satisfied”. The process begins with the input. Temperature changes are picked up from peripheral surroundings by thermoreceptive neurons throughout body which sense both warmth and cold separately. An electrical signal (the input) is then sent to the brain. Any divergence from what is known as the ‘set point’ – in this case a temperature of approx 37° – will then be identified as an ‘error signal’ by interoceptive neurons in the periventricular region of the hypothalamus. Armed with these measurements and temperature signals being relayed from the blood, the hypothalamus then launches an appropriate error response. This includes motivating behaviour to make a physical adjustment, e.g. to move around or remove surplus clothing in an attempt to control your temperature.

This type of feedback system in the body is common. Other systems necessary for survival such as regulation of blood salt and water levels are regulated in a similar way. However, the processes that motivate us to eat is much more complex.

Humans have evolved an intricate physiological system to regulate food intake which encompasses a myriad of organs, hormones and bodily systems. Furthermore, a wealth of experimental research supports the idea that the hypothalamus plays a key role in this energy homeostasis by triggering feeding behaviours. Controlling energy balance is of crucial importance and eating is primarily to maintain fat stores in the event of food shortage. If fat cell reserves in the body are low, they release a hormone called leptin which is detected as an error signal by the periventricular region of the hypothalamus. This then stimulates the lateral hypothalamus to initiate the error response. In this case, we start to feel hungry which in turns initates the somatic motor response by motivating us to eat.

Since the hypothalamus also controls metabolic rate by monitoring blood sugar levels, in theory we seem to have a similar feedback loop to temperature control. However in practice this is not a reality. The main difficulty in maintaining energy homeostasis is that motivation does not rise solely from internal biological influences. Cultural and social factors also play an important part in motivation about when, what and how often to eat. In western culture, social pressures to be thin can override the need to eat and in extreme cases like anorexia the drive state becomes reversed. The motivation is no longer to eat because they are hungry but is instead not to eat so they do feel hungry. This corruption of the reward system is well documented and is associated with delusions of body image, a concept which is also linked to the hypothalamus and the parietal lobe. Problems can also occur if an individual receives over stimulation to eat. The prevalence of obesity in today’s society is testament to this fact.

Motivation can be defined in a number of ways. Generally, it is defined as a driving force that initiates and directs behavior. In other words, motivation is a kind of internal energy which drives a person to do something in order to achieve something. It is a temporal or dynamic state within a person which is not concerned with his/her personality. There are different types of motivation such as achievement motivation, affiliation motivation, competence motivation, power motivation, and attitude motivation.

Motivation is based on three specific aspects such as the arousal of behavior, the direction of behavior, and persistence of behavior. Arousal of behavior involves what activates human behavior and direction of behavior is concerned with what directs behavior towards a specific goal. Persistence of behavior is concerned with how the behavior is sustained.

Various studies have been conducted to understand the different motives that drive a person to success. Motives are categorized into three: homeostatic motives, nonhomeostatic motives, and learned or social motives. Almost all the motives belong to one or more of these three groups.

Motives such as thirst, hunger, respiration, and excretion are included in homeostatic motives. Nonhomeostatic motives include required activities such as seeking shelter and curiosity about the environment. Curiosity, a desire for novelty, power, achievement, social affiliation, and approval are considered as learned motives or social motives.

Motivation is essential to be successful in any endeavor you undertake. It can be positive or negative, subtle or obvious, tangible or intangible. It is very important in workplaces as it plays a key role in the effective performance of employees. In industry, managers play a significant role in employee motivation. They use different motivation techniques to improve productivity, thereby promoting cooperation between employees and employers.

Learning is somewhat interrelated to motivation. In education, instructors also use motivation techniques in order to motivate the students to learn. It is essential to increase student motivation as it can make a student more competent. Also, motivation encourages self confidence and problem-solving skills.

Motivation Management Is the Key of Change

During my career, I have learned that motivation is the most important factor of change.

I have seen people who have overcome their addictive behavior only with the high motivation. In addition, I have many people who continue their addictive behaviors despite the fact that they enjoy the various opportunities, such as professional consultants, hospitalizations, participation in meetings of famous recovery groups, and support by good families, friends, and community.

Their motivation is low for giving up their addiction, and their motivation for doing addictive behavior is high. Motivation determines whether one overcomes addictive behaviors or continues them. Therefore, motivation management is the key to change. This is because habit change requires not only an increase in motivation to quit addictive behavior, but a decrease in motivation to continue the addictive behavior.

I think the motivation management includes two basic principles:

1. Ability to raise and lower motivation.

2. Ability to increase motivation while changing.

Needs are activated by attention, too. The more people pay attention to stress and anxiety and how to get rid of them, and pay attention to the enjoyment drug use produces, the more they feel are motivated for using. In contrast, whenever people pay attention to the costs and risks of long-term addiction, the motivation of quitting drugs or addictive behaviors will increase.

“Selective attention” is a simple act and strong technique that it is used during the thousands years by religions and ideologies for motivating their followers. Today, SMART Recovery benefits from this method and uses the Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) for enhancing motivation to change.

The CBA has four categories of questions:

1. What do I enjoy about my addiction? What does it do for me (be specific)?

3. What do I think I will like about giving up my addiction?

4. What do I think I will not like about giving up my addiction?

Answering these questions develops awareness and increases the motivation for quitting. The more people do this exercise, the more they will tend to enhance motivation for quitting.

Ability To Increase Motivation While Changing

Overcoming addictive behavior is a process, not an event. Many people know how painful it can be to tread the path toward change. They want to change their addictive behavior immediately, with no discomfort and no urges, without changing their beliefs and values. Such people are like those who enjoy having reached a mountaintop, but hate mountain climbing; or like soccer players who get pleasure only from winning, not from playing.

They start with the high motivation, but they lose their motivation gradually and the most of them do not reach to their goal. Few people that reach to the end of the path. They go through the entire path with anger and complaints. In contrast, those who enjoy the way their motivation increase quickly. And reach the goal with joy and lightly. Rumi believes that loving the path not only increases the motivation for us, but also carries us to the goal. He has beautifully expressed this fact in the story of a thirsty person.

On the bank of the stream there was a high wall,
painful thirsty person was on the top of the wall.

His obstacle for reaching the water was the wall;
He was in distress for the water, like a fish.

Suddenly he threw a brick into the water:
the sound of the water came to his ear like spoken words.

The water was making a sound, that is to say, (it was crying), “Hey,
what is the advantage to you of this throwing a brick at me?”

The thirsty person said, “O water, I have two advantages:
I will never give up from this work.

The first advantage is (my) hearing the sound of the water,
which to thirsty people is music to their ears.

The other advantage is that, (with) every brick I tear off this (wall),
I come (nearer) to running water.

Anyone is more thirsty on the top of the wall,
He will tear off the bricks more quickly.

Anyone is more love with the sound of the water,
He will tear off the bigger brick from the barrier.

I think the main task of people who want to overcome addictive behavior is learning motivation management. Recovery groups, psychologists, physicians, and other people and organizations involved with addiction treatment would do well to establish an environment for helping clients/patients learn this skill.
